What is the difference between the BC SPCA Kamloops Spay Neuter Clinic and a Full-Service Veterinary Hospital?
The Kamloops clinic offers lower cost spay and neuter to both the public and to its BC SPCA animals. We aim to control the animal population and reduce the number of stray or unwanted pets by providing affordable options for these procedures
Please note that unlike a full-service clinic, we have a limited ability to respond to rare but serious complications secondary to anesthesia or surgery. For this reason, we limit our patients to only young healthy animals. Please keep this in mind when choosing our services, as you may prefer to go to a full-service clinic, based on your preferences. We have provided some examples of when we recommend a full-service clinic for your animal’s spay or neuter procedure. To keep costs low, we also do not require bloodwork for our young surgical patients. Bloodwork can help detect underlying issues that may not be detectable on physical exams and is recommended prior to any anesthesia. If you would like bloodwork to be done, we recommend booking your procedure with a full-service clinic.
The limitations associated with our Spay / Neuter clinic are as follows:
-
We only accept young, healthy animals as surgical candidates
-
Dogs under 2 years of age and under 45kg (100lbs)
-
Healthy cats of any age, but bloodwork is required for cats over 5 years of age
-
We respond to emails and voice messages within 48 hours Monday to Friday (not monitored on weekends or public holidays)
-
We do not offer after-hours or weekend veterinary care or hospitalization of animals so, if your pet has an underlying medical issues that may affect their anesthesia, we will direct you to a full-service clinic or postpone their surgery
We recommend going to a full-service clinic for your pet’s spay or neuter if:
-
Your pet has a pre-existing condition:
-
Your pet is at a higher risk for anesthesia if they are:
-
Larger / Giant breed dogs
-
Seniors
-
Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Shih Tsus, Bull dogs, Frenchies)
-
Obese, in-heat or pregnant mature dogs (keep in mind most veterinarians will recommend delay of spaying in-heat dogs due to increased risk)
-
You would like an elective procedure done at the time of surgery such as:
-
You would like access to an after-hours phone line and the ability to hospitalize if any complications arise
-
You would like a clinic with weekend and evening hours for follow up rechecks or questions
